Causes of Dry Eyes
Dry eyes are caused by a decrease in tear production or an increase in tear evaporation. Tears are made up of water, fatty oils, and mucus to help make the surface of your eyes smooth and clear, and it helps protect your eyes from infection. Decreased tear production, also known as the eye condition called keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is commonly caused by aging, certain medical conditions like diabetes, medications such as antihistamines, laser eye surgery, and tear gland damage. Common causes of increased tear evaporation include wind, smoke, dry air, and a lot of computer work.
